Your Cyber Security job questions, answered

Are there lots of Cyber Security jobs available in Hong Kong SAR?

Yes! The sudden, large scale shift to remote working not only sent the demand for Cyber Security skills skyrocketing, further stretching the growing skills gap. As we continue to work remotely or in more flexible, hybrid arrangements, Cloud professionals with expertise in Cloud engineering and security will be critical personnel for a well-rounded tech team.

What job type or area of Cyber Security should I specialise in?

Cyber Security isn’t always a linear career, so our advice is to keep a broad view especially if you’re just starting out in your career. Cyber – like so many disciplines – requires true diversity of talent and thought, so work on picking up skills and experience in areas including infrastructure applications, processes, and data security to enhance your knowledge and capabilities. You can always specialise later on in your career. However, if you’re set on picking one area to build up your skills in, security engineering will be a great place to start!

What salary does a Cyber Security analyst earn in Hong Kong SAR?

Salaries will vary depending on the role, location, and type of company, but salaries typically average between HKD $360-1200K.

Use the Hays Greater China Technology Salary Guide to benchmark Cyber Security salaries in your location.

What qualifications can increase my Cyber Security salary?

At entry level, MTA Security Fundamentals, ISACA CSX Cyber Security Fundamentals Certificate, CompTIA Security+, GIAC Information Security Fundamentals (GISF) and (ISC)2 Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) are great for core knowledge.

As you continue to develop your skills and think about leadership roles, you’ll want to get certifications such as NSE, CISA, CISSP, and CISM. CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) will also give you the edge as you work towards a career in key areas of Penetration Testing.

What industries are hiring Cyber Security professionals?

As cyber-attacks and threats of attacks rise, any organisation that uses computerised systems will be concerned about security and will be looking to hire! Larger organisations in Financial Services, Retail/Consumer, Internet, Manufacturing, and Life Sciences are obvious places to start your search.

If you’re just starting in your Cyber Security career, you could give SMEs a shot as these companies are more likely to hire a security professional into a broader role and could be more flexible on technology and experience.
